Graded modality

چکیده
Note: This is a draft as of October 3, 2014 of a survey article now under review for the Companion to Semantics being prepared for Wiley by L. Matthewson, C. Meier, H. Rullmann, and E. Zimmermann. The intention is for the article to be engaging and accessible to students with 1 or 2 courses in formal semantics, so I’ve tried to keep it as non-technical and empiricallyoriented as possible. Suggestions for improvement would be very welcome. You can contact me at [email protected].

The Modality of Finite (Graded Modalties VII)
We prove a completeness theorem for Kr, an extension of K by the operator Or that means “there exists a finite number of accessible worlds such that . . . is true”, plus suitable axioms to rule it. This i s done by an application of the method of consistency properties for modal systems as in [4] with suitable adaptations. Despite no graded modality is invoked here, we consider this work as per...
متن کاملGraded Modality-Specific Specialization in Semantics: A Computational Account of Optic Aphasia
A distributed connectionist model of semantics is presented in which semantic representations develop under the pressure of learning to mediate between multiple input and output modalities in performing various tasks. The system has a topographic bias on learning that favors short connections, leading to a graded degree of modality-specific functional specialization within semantics. The approa...
متن کاملOn Context Dependence in Modal Constructions
This paper investigates a new representation format for dynamic discourse in DRT, where contextual dynamics is modeled in terms of update conditions. This new representation format is motivated by the study of context dependence in modal constructions, in particular by serious problems besetting earlier approaches to modality and modal subordination in DRT. We present an alternative DRT analysi...
متن کاملGraded modality-specific specialisation in semantics: A computational account of optic aphasia.
A long-standing debate regarding the representation of semantic knowledge is whether such knowledge is represented in a single, amodal system or whether it is organised into multiple subsystems based on modality of input or type of information. The current paper presents a distributed connectionist model of semantics that constitutes a middle ground between these unitary- versus multiple-semant...
متن کاملDifferential Contributions of Bilateral Ventral Anterior Temporal Lobe and Left Anterior Superior Temporal Gyrus to Semantic Processes
Studies of semantic dementia and repetitive TMS have suggested that the bilateral anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) underpin a modality-invariant representational hub within the semantic system. However, it is not clear whether all ATL subregions contribute in the same way. We utilized distortion-corrected fMRI to investigate the pattern of activation in the left and right ATL when participants pe...
متن کاملHemispheric Specialization within the Superior Anterior Temporal Cortex for Social and Nonsocial Concepts
Studies of semantic dementia, imaging, and repetitive TMS have suggested that the bilateral anterior temporal lobes (ATLs) underpin a modality-invariant representational hub within the semantic system. Questions remain, however, regarding functional specialization across a variety of knowledge domains within the ATL region. We investigated direct evidence for the functional relevance of the sup...
